Case Study: Analysing passive design strategies

In a group of 4 to 5, students are required to choose a building either in Kuala Lumpur or Singapore to conduct the investigation.

Our group choosed the Design School in Nanyang Technology Unversity which is located at Singapore. The passive designs of the building include the almond shape green roof and internal couryard. We separated the information we get from the site and references from the websites into 2 parts, which are the Wind Analysis Board and Thermal Analysis Board.

In this project, I was in a group of 5, which include, Hon Yi Hang, Lee Yi Na, Leong Jia Qi, Prisca Kwan and also Yew Jie En. The pictures above shows the 2 boards that our group did, including the Thermal analysis board and also the Wind Analysis board. The thermal analysis board was responsibled by Hon Yi Hang, Lee Yi Na and Prisca Kwan while the wind analysis boards was handle by Leong Jia Qi, Yew Jie En and me.

The Thermal Analysis Board focus on the sun path, the exposing elevations of the building to the sun and the passive design used to overcome the heat transfer through the sun exposure, in this case are the green roof and the low-e glass windows. While the Wind Analysis Boards focus more on the pool in the courtyard, which introduce evaporative cooling to the courtyard in the building.

The project had brought in new passive designs into my experience, throught the site visit trip to Singapore, not only from NTU, I also get to visit other buildings that have unique passive design to overcome the high heat and humid environment of Singapore for human comfort. This is truly an educational and worthy lesson that I've learned in this module.
