Description

The chosen historical building for our group is Lian Huat Paper Co. which is located at Penang. Lian Huat Paper Co. operates in a traditional Hokkien shophouse which much of the typical chinese shophouses ornaments, doors and windows and architecture still remain. This project required the students to express the Genius Loci, Poetic Quality, Cultural Attributes and Technical or Constructioj Details of the building in drawings. It allows us to be observant and sensitive to the environment of the building which would benefits us in the future in designing our own architecture.

Reflective

I've learnt the importance of preserving the heritage of the buildings in this project, by expressing my feelings of the building in my drawings and a few research of the information of the traditional Hokkien shophouse, I've realize that there are ornaments and constructions that have their own traditional believes that may protect and bless the people that are using the building. Other than that, I've learnt the basic structure of a traditional shophouse such as multiple airwells, spatious halls and yards through the rough drawings of the floor plans and sections. Most of all, I've experience the spatial quality of the shophouse which is like an ancient environmental friendly building such as natural ventilation and lightning through the airwells and high ceiling which allow the interior to be cool during the day. This trip is very beneficial for my future designs.
