Project - Case Study Paper

The Asian architecture that I choosed for the case study paper is the Binh Thanh House by the Vo Trong Ngia Architects which located at Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam. The reason behind is that this residential building implies the traditional ventilation element, the ventilation or also known as pattern blocks as the facades of the building. By alternating the use of active and passive ventilation within the building, it creates a mixture of traditional and modern lifestyles for the occupants in the building. In terms of the relation between the design and contextual elements, the architects well used the greenery provided from the zoo across the canal and also the Nghe Canal located just beside the building provides evaporative cooling to the building itself which make the building to be sustainable. Below embedded the Topic Proposal, Presentation Board, Presentation slides and also the final case study paper.

Reflective

Before conducting this subject, I was only introduced to western architectures and study in depth of the history of them and different era and different styles throughout the history of western architecture. But after this subject started, I have learnt the design styles which is much related to where we are and also learnt that what we should implies on our studio design depending on the sun, the wind, and views and other contextual elements around the site. Especially in this case study paper, with our own research to complete this case study paper, I really did get a lot of knowledge in making the design sustainable and comfortable for the long stay of the occupant in the building. As the Binh Thanh House is designed by the Vo Trong Nghia Architects, by browsing through their pass designs which covers institutes, restaurants, conference hall and etc, it did opens my mind and developed a whole new perspective in designing a good architecture. Most importantly, I learnt that a modern design is not all about glass and steel and looks futuristic, but developing a new construction technique with the used of traditional element, and cosidering the weather, the climate, the context condition to produce a sustainable design. And I also learnt that we shall not copy architectures from other countries without well consideration, instead, to keep our nation's identity with the design of the building.
