Project 1 - Memorial
This project allows student to express their designs in creative experiences in the conducted spaces. There were 2 models required in this project, which was to produce 2 designs of memorials respective to different events, the 1st memorial was for the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew and the 2nd was for the memorial for the Lahad Datu Incident in Sabah. By using different principles of deisgns, linear and concentric, in a group of 5, students are required to choose the most suitable principle for their designs for the 2 respective events, and be able to have a convincing explanation on such decision.
In this project, I was team with Hiew Eyang, Hon Yi Hang, Pua Zhi Qin and Ong Yii Siang. We choosed the Lahad Datu Incident for linear as linear would be a good form of design for history telling, while the concentric form is for the memorial of the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew as the principle is more on surrounding a main character.
For the memorial of the Lahad Datu Incident, which is in linear form, the concept of the design is 'Enlightenment' as the sequence of experience of the space is from peace of the unknown, to the experince of war of the indent and lastly to the cherish of peacefulness after the incident. It reflects the numbness and the unconciousness of the people before the incident happened, as they took their present peaceful living condition as granted, so there was no prepare and cautiousness of danger in their country. And as the visitors finished the whole journey of the memorial, they will realize the important of keeping the peacefulness of our country and take this incident as a lesson to the future generations.
The concentric Mr Lee Kuan Yew memorial is an experience for the visitors to feel the ups and downs of his life. As Singapore is kicked out by Malaysia in 1963, thefore the building appears to be slanted aside. As the design is positioned beside a hill, visitors are to walk down to the building, being deeper into the building, it's like going into the deeper side of Mr Lee Kuan Yew as a successful leader, as there is a reflecting pool at the center of the building, it brings in breeze and coolness which reflect that Mr Lee Kuan Yew brought in glory and prosperity to Singapore.
Reflective
I've learned a lot of expressing the feeling of spaces in an abstract way in this project, and also conduct the experience into the design which can be translated to the visitors in the memorials. At first I was not sure about what genus loci means and I found it hard to express my feelings through design and verbally before as we're really encountered alot of problems and questiones that were yet to be answered, or should I say, we never thought about, but I did improved a lot throughtout this project with the help of lecturers and my groupmates. The most valuable thing that I've got in this project is 'Do you want to go into this building? Do you like this design?' which was asked by my lecturers, this quote affect me a lot as it totally change my aspect in design as it not just to fulfil the project's requirements and the lecturers advices, it also need to be loved and passioned on what we're into.
